The newest ship in the Royal Caribbean fleet, Quantum really is what its name suggests: a quantum leap. This 4,180-passenger ship is the company's first true 'smart ship'; everything you do on board can be booked via an app or one of the tablet screens all over the ship, and super-fast WiFi means this is a vessel for people who never want to be out of touch.

Quantum has a host of fantastic and innovative features. The North Star is without a doubt a sensation; a London Eye-style pod that hoists you 300 feet above the ship for bird's eye views. There's a sky diving simulator, Ripcord by I-Fly, and in the multi-purpose SeaPlex sports area, as well as flying trapeze lessons, a large rink for bumper cars and roller skating (not at the same time, of course). Our favourite is the Bionic Bar, where two robots mix and serve cocktails ordered via a tablet. Let's not forget the inside cabins, either; they have a full-sized video wall onto which a 'virtual balcony' is projected, so you can see exactly what's going on outside.

Quantum's designers have completely re-thought the use of space on a ship. There is no main dining room, just four large restaurants with open seating, serving anything from French classics to Asian fusion. You can pre-book these via the app. For a fee, you can dine in, among others, Chops Grille, which serves superb steaks and seafood; Jamie's Italian, masterminded by celebrity chef Jamie Oliver; Wonderland; which does indeed look like a set from Alice in Wonderland, serving creative molecular cuisine; or Izumi, offering Japanese Asian-fusion cuisine.

One of the best aspects of Quantum is what must be the world's biggest 'living room', the fantastic Two70, a supremely restful lounge by day, with floor-to-ceiling windows taller then the height of two decks. By night, this transforms into a spectacular entertainment venue, with giant video screens, bigger than any IMAX theatre, and dazzling, dancing robotic screens. Don't miss a visit to the theatre, either, where there's a full-scale production of Mamma Mia showing.
